“「鉛筆」という名称や、鉛筆の芯の材料の「黒鉛」の物質名から、「鉛筆には鉛が使われている」と信じている者があるが、これも誤りである。鉛筆が使われるようになった初期のころはまだ化学知識が未熟であり、黒鉛は鉛の一種だと考えられていた。シャープペンシルの芯を英語でlead（「鉛」の意）、鉛筆のことをドイツ語でBleistift（「鉛の筆記具」の意）、はたまた日本語で「鉛筆」と呼ぶのはこの名残である。18世紀末から19世紀初めにかけてようやく黒鉛が炭素からなる物質で鉛を含まないということが解明された。黒鉛は炭素の結晶であり、近代以降の黒鉛鉛筆の芯に重金属は用いられていない。”
